Solar-Clear FAQs

What is Solar-Clear? How does it work?
The answer is pretty simple and involves a natural technology that has been employed for thousands of years. Specifically, naturally occurring minerals, copper and zinc ions in this case, are released slowly into the pool water by Solar-Clear. The sun’s energy is converted via photovoltaic cells in to a low voltage current that slowly dissolves a sacrificial anode beneath the pool water surface. The ions in the water retard the growth of algae and other microorganisms resulting in a significant reduction in the amount of oxidizer (chlorine or bromine) required to keep your pool sparkling clear, clean and healthy. Solar-Clear also works to reduce surface staining and scale build up on pool and pool equipment surfaces.

Do I still need to use chlorine and/or other chemicals?
Solar-Clear will reduce, significantly, the amount of chlorine that your pool will require to remain clean and sparkling clear. You should, however, maintain a free chlorine residual of 1.0 – 1.5 ppm as determined by a suitable test kit. It is also important to keep the pH and total alkalinity levels balanced.

How long will my Solar-Clear last?
Properly maintained, your Solar-Clear unit should provide many years of effective service. The Solar-Clear sacrificial anode (the part of the device that releases the natural metal ions into the pool water) will slowly dissolve over time and will need to be replaced after 2-3 seasons depending on use, climate and other variable factors.

Will Solar-Clear work in larger pools?
For pools larger than 32,000 gallons we recommend using two (or more) Solar-Clear units. The basic concept and instructions for use remain the same but more natural, purifying minerals are required as the volume of pool water is increased.

Will Solar-Clear work with biguanide type sanitizers (Baquacil, Revacil, Soft Swim etc.)?
Unfortunately, Solar-Clear is not compatible with biguanide sanitizers. If you would like to realize the savings and naturally pure water delivered by Solar-Clear follow the instructions provided by your biguanide manufacturer to switch (back) to a halogen (chlorine, bromine) sanitizer system.

How about other pool chemical products?
With the exception of the biguanide sanitizers mentioned above, virtually all other pool chemical products are acceptable for use in pools where Solar-Clear is operating. If you have any specific questions refer to the use instructions for the product in question, contact us or go to for more information.
